Word data and license

Learn Japanese: 2,000 Words (also called JP 2K) is a vocabulary practice app. Each word has a Japanese form, a kana reading, and an English meaning. We built that list from the sources below and publish the list as a downloadable word-data file at zentsu.app/japanese2k/icons.json, in frequency order.

Sources

The JLPT vocabulary lists by Jonathan Waller at tanos.co.uk, which are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution license.
The JMdict/EDICT dictionary files, the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG). The English meanings derive from these files, and we use them in accordance with the EDRDG license.
open-anki-jlpt-decks, which compiled these lists and is released under the MIT License.
wordfreq by Robyn Speer, version 3.1.1, which contributes frequency information used to order the words. Its data is offered under CC BY-SA 4.0, and its Japanese list draws on Wikipedia, OpenSubtitles through OPUS, the OSCAR web corpus, Twitter, and Reddit. wordfreq also includes the SUBTLEX word lists by Marc Brysbaert and colleagues, which are freely available data.
Japanese sentences with human-reviewed furigana from Tatoeba, offered under CC BY 2.0 FR. Reading shares and the ranking of numbers and dates come from counts over these sentences. No Tatoeba sentence text is published.

License

The japanese, reading, and english fields in icons.json, and the same word data inside the JP 2K app, are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0). You may copy, adapt, and share them, including commercially. Credit Tanos, the EDRDG, wordfreq and Tatoeba as listed above, link to this license, and release any adapted version of the data under the same license.

This license covers the word data only. The app itself is governed by the Zentsu LLC Terms of Use.
